3 Signs Your Toddler’s Shoes Are Too Small
(and What to Do)

At Simples, we’re obsessed with healthy feet (and happy parents). Here are three easy-to-spot signs that your toddler’s shoes might be too small — plus what you can do about it.

1. The Toes Test: Squished or Curled Up

Take a look at your toddler’s toes when they’re wearing shoes. Do they curl under? Do they look squeezed together? That’s a clear sign the shoes are too small. A toddler’s toes should have room to lie flat and move a little inside the shoe.

Quick tip: Press gently at the front of the shoe when your toddler is standing. You should feel about a thumb’s width of space (roughly 1 cm) between the end of their longest toe and the tip of the shoe. No gap? Time for a new pair.

2. Red Marks or Blisters After Play

When you take your toddler’s shoes off, check for marks on their skin. Red spots, indentations around the toes, or blisters on the heel mean the shoe is rubbing in the wrong places. Sometimes kids won’t complain — they just accept the discomfort. But their skin tells the truth.

Quick tip: After a playdate or park trip, do a “shoe check.” A little mark from socks is normal, but deep red lines or blisters mean their shoes are too snug.

3. The Wobble Walk (or the Shoe Tug)

Toddlers walk in all sorts of hilarious ways, but if you notice they’re tripping more than usual, it could be their shoes. Too-small shoes make it harder for them to balance and run. Some kids will even tug at their shoes or try to take them off — their not-so-subtle way of saying, help, my feet need space!

Quick tip: Watch how your toddler moves. If they seem clumsy in ways that don’t match their usual playfulness, it might be the shoes, not the child.

What to Do Next

The good news? Fixing shoe fit is easy.

Measure regularly: Toddler feet grow about half a size every 2–4 months. A quick measurement at home (or at the store) can save guesswork.

Choose shoes with wiggle room: Look for wide toe boxes and flexible materials that give feet space to grow and breathe.

Rotate pairs: If possible, have two pairs of shoes on hand. This gives shoes a chance to air out and ensures your toddler always has a backup that fits.

Why Simple Shoes are Different

We designed Wonderskips with podiatrists and pediatricians to make sizing simpler. Our shoes feature wide toe boxes, flexible EVA material, and thoughtful design details that let toddler feet grow naturally. Every pair is built to support healthy movement without the fuss of complicated fastenings or rigid structures.

Because the best shoes are the ones kids don’t think about — they just run, play, and explore.

Takeaway

If you notice squished toes, red marks, or wobbly steps, it’s time for new shoes. With the right fit, your toddler will have the freedom to climb, jump, and run without discomfort — and you’ll have the peace of mind that their little feet are growing the way they should.
