The Toe Space Test: The 60-Second At-Home Fit Check

There’s one small detail that makes a big difference for toddler shoes: toe space.

Too little, and toes curl under or press against the front of the shoe. Too much, and kids trip over their own feet. Getting it right isn’t complicated — in fact, you can check shoe fit at home in under a minute.

Here’s how.

Step 1: The Thumb Test

With your toddler standing, press gently at the front of their shoe. You should feel about a thumb’s width of space (around 1 cm) between the tip of their longest toe and the shoe edge.

  • No space? Shoes are too small — time to size up.

  • Too much space? Shoes are too big and may cause trips.

Step 2: The Wiggle Test

Ask your toddler to wiggle their toes inside the shoe. (They’ll either love showing off their wiggles or look at you like you’re silly — both are fine.)

  • What you want: Toes that move freely, not curled or squished.

Step 3: The Walk Test

Watch them take a few steps. Shoes should move with the foot, not slip at the heel or cause stumbling.

  • What you want: Natural steps, no dragging or clunky movement.

Why Toe Space Matters

Toddler feet are soft and growing fast. Without room to spread and lengthen, shoes can affect balance and comfort. A quick fit check helps kids walk, run, and climb with confidence.

A Parent’s Quick Story

One Simples mum told us:

“I thought my daughter’s shoes still fit because she never complained. Then I checked with the thumb test — no space at all! No wonder she kept tripping.”

Sometimes it’s not complaints that tell the story — it’s the little checks.

Takeaway

In less than a minute, you can check if your toddler’s shoes fit well: thumb test, wiggle test, walk test. Small checks make a big difference for happy feet.
